As my readers may remember, I decided a short while ago not to offer my songs as torrents, for several reasons. Even though at the time I was criticized for being a bit premature about this, it seems I was right:
Operators of The Pirate Bay stand trial on Monday in Stockholm. The four defendants from the popular file-sharing web site are charged with being accessories to breaking copyright law and may face fines or up to two years in prison if found guilty. This will in all probability shut down Pirate Bay, which leads us inexorably to this:
Researchers at Delft University warn that large parts of the BitTorrent network might collapse if The Pirate Bay is forced to shut down. A large part of the available torrents use The Pirate Bay as tracker, and other available trackers will probably be overloaded if all traffic is shifted there. The Pirate Bay is currently using eight servers for their trackers. According to the researchers, even trackerless torrents using the DHT protocol will face problems: “One bug in a DHT sorting routine ensures that it can only “stumble upon success”, meaning torrent downloads will not start in seconds or minutes if Pirate Bay goes down in flames.”
So who’s right now, bitches? I mean, what would piss a fan off more in the world than to be told songs are available here via bit torrent, only to be denied? And as I stated before, with the widespread proliferation of broadband bit torrent simply isn’t necessary to download song files – hell, by the time a person fires up a tracker he/she could have already downloaded it from this rock solid location that will ALWAYS be right here, with our songs nicely organized on our downloads page.
PS even though this XKCD is pro torrent, I still loved it at the time for it’s cutting edgeness – get it? they’ve got swords?…nevermind…
