Thinking About Life

I have a friend who is going through some tough times, and I sent him this email which originated from an article about improving your chess rating:

“Today, I want to take a detour from our “make more, buy more, fuck more” culture and argue for the merits of mediocrity, of being blasé boring and average.

Not the merits of pursuing mediocrity, mind you — because we all should try to do the best we possibly can — but rather, the merits of accepting mediocrity when we end up there despite our best efforts.” – Mark Manson (lol I don’t even know who that is).

To conclude, the best advice I can give you is: It is all about the hunt, not about the kill.”

Dave here: I would even add avoid the kill at all costs – just enjoy the hunt (which when you get right down to it, is just experiencing life [are you experienced?]*) and make it last as long as possible. I’m there in life right now (thanks be to God), and aside from my health, I’ve never been happier. BTW, when the guy stopped trying so hard, ironically his score went up faster, even though he had less time to devote to chess! He thinks it’s because once the pressure is off to be the best, he actually found he was enjoying chess far more. I absolutely related (for me, as being a dad and music career-wise, not chess ratings, although I do enjoy a good game of chess).

Anyway, I miss you man, and wish there was some way we could get together more often. Life just sucks sometimes, but it comes in waves, or cycles, I’ve found: good times (that you only recognize in hindsight just HOW good they were) and bad times. The bad times seem like they last forever, but once you break through back to the good, it is SO good. You are going through some tough times right now, but you WILL see good fun times again, I feel sure. Keep the faith brother.

*The Are You Experienced thing is a reference to Hendrix, who we both dig, bigtime.
